The contract should include where you will work, what company you will work for, and what work you will be doing. After obtaining a work permit, you will need to apply for a work visa at the Portuguese embassy to enter Portugal. Once the visa is approved, the employer can apply for a work while upon arrival in Portugal, the worker can apply for a long-term residence permit. If you live in an EU country or an EU member state, you do not need to apply for a special visa to work in Portugal. Those wishing to work in Portugal can apply for a national long- term visa (resident visa) at their local Portugal embassy or consulate.

Third-country nationals need to apply for a Portuguese work visa at the embassy or consulate in their country of origin after receiving confirmation that their Portuguese work permit application has been approved by their employer. Non-EU/EFTA residents who wish to start a small business or freelance in Portugal go through the same process to obtain a Portuguese residence visa as an employee. You are eligible for a self-employment visa if you have a job offer from a vocational school or research center in Portugal. After five years of residence in Portugal, you can claim Portuguese permanent residence and also Portuguese citizenship after six years.
